An accumulator model of semantic interference Action editor : Andrea Stocco

چکیده
To explain latency effects in picture-word interference tasks, cognitive models need to account for both interference and stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) effects. As opposed to most models of picture-word interference, which model the time course during the task in a ballistic manner, the RACE model (retrieval by accumulating evidence) presented in this paper accounts for semantic interference during the interval between the retrieval onset and the actual retrieval. RACE is implemented as an extension to the ACT-R architecture of cognition. By modeling the retrieval process, RACE offers a more precise account of semantic memory retrieval latencies in different interference and SOA conditions than other ACT-R models. In this paper, we discuss the architectural assumptions underlying RACE and simulations of a picture-word interference experiment [Glaser, W. R., & Düngelhoff, F. J. (1984). The time course of picture-word interference. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 10(5), pp. 640–654.]. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Syntactic comprehension in agrammatism: A computational model
In this paper we present a detailed computational model of agrammatic aphasia that is consistent with the Slow Syntax Hypothesis. In particular, our model postulates that the cause of the slowing of syntax processing is a deficit in overcoming irrelevant active lexical cues. This causes interference in retrieval of lexical and semantic information, which in turn causes a misrepresentation of se...
متن کاملAn Accumulator Model Account of Semantic Interference in Memory Retrieval
To explain latency effects in picture-word interference tasks (Glaser & Düngelhoff, 1984, cf. Stroop, 1935), cognitive models need to account for both interference and SOA effects. As opposed to most ACT-R models, which model the time course in a ballistic manner, the RACE model (Retrieval by ACcumulating Evidence) presented here accounts for semantic interference during the retrieval interval....

متن کاملAdaptive but non - optimal visual search behavior with highlighted displays q Action editor : Andrea Stocco
Previous research [Fisher, D. L., & Tan, K. C. (1989). Visual displays: The highlighting paradox. Human Factors, 31(1), 17–30] suggested that making certain items visually salient, or highlighting, can speed performance in visual search tasks. But interface designers cannot always anticipate users’ intended targets, and highlighting non-target items can lead to performance decrements. An experi...
متن کاملTesting fMRI Predictions of a Dual-Task Interference Model
A previously developed ACT-R/threaded cognition model of dual-task interference (Borst, Taatgen & Van Rijn, 2009) was used to predict neuroimaging data in four brain areas. These predictions were tested in an fMRI experiment, which confirmed the predictions in three of the areas. The fourth area, the intraparietal sulcus, showed a different pattern than predicted. To account for this, a new map...
